Archived from groups: sci>research>careers (more info?)

Came across some episode of the show "Cold Case" (on CBS), which
Straydog and others on here would like. (The episode was titled
"sabotage"). It was a fictional dramatization of issues which have
been discussed here on src for last half decade or so.

It was about some mechanical engineering guy who had everything going
wrong all at once such as:

- he got canned from his job being outsourced to Bangalore, India and
couldn't find another job
- he lost his house due to eminent domain and eventually foreclosure
- his 4 year old daughter died from a treatable cancer, due to
hospitals and insurance companies stringing him along and not doing
much.

So the guy sends pipe bombs built into wooden music boxes to people
who he felt wronged him, like his former boss, the do-nothing doctor
at the hospital, his brother's family, etc ... and either killed and/
or maimed them over several years. (The guy was squatting in a run
down abandoned house).

The guy tried to justify his "unabomber" style actions, as the world
becoming a place where nobody cares about anything anymore, and that
hard work and doing all the right things (ie. getting an education)
were all largely an exercise in futility.

its a nasty nasty deal for out of work engineers..... having been one
and still am to a large degree i know,,, all that saved me from total
ruin was seeing the mess coming soon enough to develop handyman skills
on the side.,,, that work funded reestablsihement of a modest
contracting and consulting career,

both of those now headed for the tank with a general economic
collapse looming.... again i saw that coming and divested myself of
property and tax liabilities and have now a 'zero overhead' life
style (motor home).. so now i can make it on marginal volume of
work, and lower the rates as necessary to keep some work happening...
and a SS backup if i need it,

some peace has ensued.

those too young to draw SS have no backup...if they didnt see this
coming, its a problem... if they have families to support its a real
issue... many no doubt went onto welfare...thats good for 2 years...
then nothing but aid for the kids... they can live on that..... as the
states get in deeper financial trouble that will be cut drastically.

Next comes a crime wave.... a person must be ready for...If i lost
my tools or compuuter it would be a major disaster... gotta keep em
spread around so one hit wont ruin you....and well guarded....
vehicles with silent alarms etc. I was out at a starbucks two days
ago, and was arriving back to see a black pickup pull in tight next to
my motor home and two guys casing it... like an idiot i surprised
them, ....a guard for the parking lot turned his light on them... they
left.

Lackng that it might not have ended well.... was completely
unarmed... those two guys were young and strong.

I might start packing heat again.... better charged with carrying than
dead.... there are other options a guy can work out as well, that
sometimes the law forgives....

I wouldnt walk up on em next time...Id stay 50 yards away and tell
them that Ive called the cops.... these can still rush you though...
if you are alone these days you need to be armed i think.
