Reveiwed in Wash Post "Book World" for Jan 13, 2008:
title: "Overtreated: Why Too Much Medicine is Making Us Sicker and Poorer"
by: Shannon Brownlee (Bloomsbury, 343 pp.).
Review is by: Amanda Schaffer, a sci/med columnist for Slate.
Review talks about the book talking about many treatments that have been
shown to be "...ultimately ...unnecessary, ineffective, more dangerous
than imagined, or sometimes more deadly than the disease they were
intended to treat."
Also at issue are high-tech (& high expense) procedures, invasive
procedures (which carry risks of their own).
Why does it happen? The medical "industry" is primarily profit motivated
and this is not a new idea but a substantial number of medical advances
lend themselves to marketing, advertising, and hype.
I think I need to make a list of book titles (as a FAQ) on BMI (beware the
medical industry). >> Stay informed about: Another book.... |

Stay the heck away from doctors by exercising, eating a heck of a lot
less
meat, controling glucose, weight, exercise, high blood pressure.
Crabs, the TV is full of pharma ads and now health carrier and
insurance co. ads,
like 30 minute spots for Humana. Outfits like that are footing the
bill for market
research firms like gallup to practice more mind manipulation.
I do go periodically to get those prescriptions for 5 dollar a month
anti-depressant pills
which personally help get me through the winter, and still feel ripped
off by the 10 minute
visit with a 90 dollar charge. Every family over 40 should invest in a
blood pressure cuff,
a weight scale and a glucose meter and take the numbers seriously.
That would offset
the need to take cholesterol numbers seriously.
(how can a freaking doctor diagnose depression in 10 minutes
is beyond me, It is at the point that I just tell the doctor what I
want, because he is
pushing on patent meds like effexor xl (real bad withdrawal symptoms
on that), and
seriously expensive. I suspect he gets a kick back on a lot of stuff,
the office has a lot
of promotional brochures and posters for expensive meds and equipment.
(like inverters
for back treatments.). >> Stay informed about: Another book.... |

Reminds me. Russell likes to chid me with "Resistance is futile" (from the
Borg), and I had an experience to tell.
Couple days ago I was in the grocery store just for one item: milk.
Walked by where they had tons of Krispy Kreme doughnuts. Boy-oh-boy did I
have the (emotional impulse) to buy a box...and...eat the whole box.
$2.99 for six. So. I picked up the box and..the superego took over from
the ego and the id...and I read the calorie specifications (love the govt
for requiring disclosure labels): 200 calories per. Six would be 1200
calories. Not healthy for the bod. Sugar and lipids. Not healthy for the
bod. Two strikes against the impulse buy.
The clincher: Its also a $2.99 hit on the wallet. Not healthy for the
wallet, either.
So. Put the box back on the shelf. Victory. Walked to the checkout counter
with a smug, defiant, successful look on my face. Victory.
I successfully defended the bod and I successfully defended the wallet.
Resistance is not futile.
Bonus of it all: you get bragging rights here on SRC.

That's fine, but I wanted to hear from Russell. He's the one who, after I
say something, says "Resistance is futile" (great Borg opening line), and
I had to _show_ that Resistance is NOT futile (RINF).
It is important that the imperitive for any of our actions come from OUR
internal free will, and not directed from external imperitives attempting
to make us feel (by fooling us) that OUR actions are decided by OUR free
will. The test is simple: if you don't _see_ that box of Krispy Kreme
doughnuts, then it is not YOU free will that is cajoling you into buying
them.
Just look at any modern grocery store and ask how much that is there is
necessary for life and health. One whole aisle of junk soda pop. One whole
aisle of junk potatoe chips. Another aisle of junk for the home,
cosmetics, etc. etc. etc. What is left? Legitimate merchandise for
survival: about 20% of the store? Fruits and vegetables--what you really
need for health--less than 5%? The rest: for vanity, ego,
self-gratification, looking cool (kewl?), being part of the "Pepsi
generation"? Yuk.
Hah! Victory over the Borg!!!!!

Of course. This is triumph of propaganda and advertising.
The same could be said about children's toys. >> Stay informed about: Another book.... |

So, where is Russell, anyway? Looks like Russki cable is more
important for him than your donuts ... Or, may be he is trying to give
up his donuts and can't cope with temptation? >> Stay informed about: Another book.... |

Russell is AWOL. He could not come up with a good "come-back" to my
_proof_ that "Resistance is NOT Futile" the come-back to the Borg battle
cry. And, he, maybe, is still working on a counter-story.
Looks like Russki cable is more
> important for him than your donuts ...
Yeah, the location is evidently somewhere out in the Medicteranian close
to Alexandria Egypt, and another article mentioned that somewhere off
Taiwan they had a cable damage that did not get repaired for weeks, so
their internet traffic was way down, too.
Or, may be he is trying to give
> up his donuts and can't cope with temptation?
It is possible to have some fun while performing "Resistance is NOT
futile": you can enter the grocery store with all the "siren" (you know a
siren? The old term for 'feme fatale'? pretty women from old ancient Greek
story about Odysius, coming back from the Trojan War, and the sirens
singing hypnotic songs?), and to protect yourself from the lure of the
advertising, you can say to yourself (like Star Trek): "battle stations,
sheilds up" etc., and maybe put on dark glasses (like Matrix), and
be...theatrical about this mission.

The title of the thread did not attract my attention.

I had tasty pastries for breakfast, cinnamon roll and
raspberry croissant, at my favorite local shop. Picked
up some chocolate cherry croissant pudding for dessert
tonight. Donuts are OK if one lacks anything better.
Cheers,

No, your thread title (another book) didn't attrack my interest
earlier, but since it kept getting added to I decided to check it
out.
BTW resistance is futile. Either you are following the cues
the Borg are giving or you're expending effort struggling against
them. Either way, they are running your life.
