I need some career advice. I finished grad school recently with an MS
in Information/Network security and graduated at the top of my class.
I don't have any professional IT experience other than basic desktop
support which I did for 3 years prior to grad school. I can't seem to
get a foot in the door in the information security or networking
arena. There are tons of jobs out there in infosec and networking,
but they all want at least 2+ years of professional experience.

Seems like I can only get a job in help desk which is kind of related
to what I was doing prior to grad school. I recently got an offer for
a job in software QA at an entry level salary, which again is not
related to my degree. I feel like I could have gotten this job
without my grad school education.

What should I do? I feel like I've wasted time in school because I
can't even get an entry level position related to my field of study.
Should I just take the software QA job or just keep looking? Any
advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Things are much tougher now than in the past and experience is key.
Take the job, show your stuff and immediately start your move up into
the areas that interest you. You may do that at the company where you
are working or may need to look elsewhere. The main thing is that you
will be getting a foot in the door and it is much easier to find
another job when you have one.

My degree is not an MIS degree, it is an Info/Network Security
degree. And I did do a summer internship (a highly rated program) in
the middle of my 2 year grad program.

Two problems. MIS is not worth much and you should have sought out
internships while in school.

Hi,

from what I have read this is mere propaganda and is
also applied to other Indian rulers, e.g., "Shah Jahan
cut off the thumbs of the construction workers".

See

Handwoven Fabrics of India. by Jasleen Dhamija, Jyotindra Jain
The Journal of Asian Studies, Vol. 49, No. 4 (Nov., 1990), pp. 961-962

'In the section on "Eastern India," the author dispels
that often-mentioned saying about the British cutting
off the thumbs of the Indian weavers'

Thanks for not telling fibs about British history,
-ji.

Truth is bad enough without propaganda.

Regards,
Max Muir
